Amanda joined the Institute of Photonics in February 2004 as a member of the Applications Team having gained both her postgraduate and undergraduate degrees from The University of Manchester in 2004 and 2000 respectively. Her PhD research examined the use of the viscous drag force method to measure the forces involved in an optical trap. Since starting at the Institute Amanda has worked as a postdoc on two different research projects: ‘The Abraham & Minkowski dilemma: an experimental resolution’ and ‘Deep, time-resolved imaging in aberrant biological media by adaptive and predictive wavefront correction’ . In 2006 Amanda was promoted to Associate Team Leader of the Applications Team.

Amanda was recently awarded a five year research fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC. The fellowship aims to combine adaptive optics technology with advanced microscopy techniques to greatly improve image quality and resolution when viewing at depth into biological samples. Amanda’s research interests include non-linear microscopy, optical trapping, optical angular momentum, adaptive optics and optical aberration correction.
