SCOSA to host IONS 6!

SCOSA is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the sixth bi-annual IONS meeting at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

IONS is a conference ran by students for students. It will run for three days from the 9th till the 11th of July and include two days of technical talks, followed by a social excursion day.

Full details will be announced shortly, but in the mean time please take a look at the official IONS website for information on past events.

Tom Baer to visit Strathclyde University

SCOSA is pleased to announce that OSA President Tom Baer is to visit The University of Strathclyde on Monday the 13th of February.

Tom will be meeting with students for a buffet lunch and giving a talk about the benefits of joining OSA at the Institute of Photonics at 12pm

Please note that the Wolfson Building has a security door, and if you are attending the talk please email Antony Smith in advance. On entry to the building, there is a telephone at the door which you should use to call the secretary to gain access.

The title and abstract is:

The Global Impact of Photonics:Applications in medical imaging, solar energy, and scientific research.
Advances in photonics are playing a critical role in many areas of technology which will have great impact on our quality of life. I will discuss breakthroughs in photonics technologies that are revolutionizing medical diagnosis, providing viable alternatives to fossil fuel, and enabling fundamental discoveries in the life sciences."

FIO, pizza and beer!

SCOSA Vice-President David Hughes attended the Frontiers in Optics conference in Rochester, NY. He represented the chapter at the annual student chapter meeting, there should be a full report coming soon to the website.

Also, we are going to be holding a pizza and beer evening at the Strathclyde University Physics common room on the 13th of November, 4.30pm. Please come along to find out more about joining SCOSA.

Officially Strathclyde's Chapter of OSA

On the 10th of June, it was agreed that the University of Strathclyde should have an official Student Chapter of the Optical Society of America.

And so it was created. It is named SCOSA (Strathclyde Chapter of OSA, pronounced Scotia), and this is its website. It's early days at the moment, so the best thing to do is to bookmark it and keep checking back.

This front page is going to serve as the 'news' page in which you can keep up to date with our activities. It will also be here that you will be able to download our newsletter in pdf format at regular intervals.
